Description

This digital dataset represents the interim geologic map of the Tooele 30' x 60' quadrangle. This map is an interim release prior to final map production. Map data were compiled from several prior sources and updated where needed. Clark compiled and mapped the bedrock and surficial deposit geology, Oviatt revised and mapped the Quaternary-Tertiary geology, and Dinter mapped the Great Salt Lake fault zone and Carrington fault. In addition, we used selected exploration drill hole, water well, and publically available geophysical data from several sources to map concealed and inferred faults, delineate basins, and draw geologic cross sections. The geologic map is intended for use at 1:62,500 scale. The map depicts geologic formations, faults, folds, lake shorelines, selected drill holes, and other information, and is accompanied by an explanation which includes the geologic unit descriptions, figures, tables, mapping sources, correlation charts, lithologic columns, geologic symbols, and geologic cross sections. The data tables summarize: (1) radiocarbon ages, (2) tephrochronology ages, (3) sediment cores, (4) drill holes/wells, (5) radiometric ages, (6) U-Pb zircon ages, (7) whole-rock geochemical data, and (8) fossil ages. The Tooele 30' x 60' quadrangle straddles urban and rural areas west of Salt Lake City, in Tooele, Salt Lake, and Davis Counties, northwest Utah. The map area is in the eastern Basin and Range Province, and includes several mainly north-south-trending mountain ranges and intervening valleys, and the southern part of Great Salt Lake.
