This data set was calculated by the Utah Department of Health, Office of Healthcare Statistics (OHCS) using Utah’s All Payer Claims Database (APCD).

The quality data in this table have been collected from health plans using standardized Health Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS) and are maintained and provided by the Utah Department of Health, Office of Health Care Statistics. The data span the years from 2010 through 2017. Each year of data represents patient care that occurred in the previous calendar year. This dataset is a sample of the full HEDIS data which is available for purchase from the Office of Health Care Statistics. Also known as Medicare Spending per Beneficiary (MSPB) Spending Breakdowns by Claim Type file. The data displayed here show average spending levels during hospitals’ Medicare Spending per Beneficiary (MSPB) episodes. An MSPB episode includes all Medicare Part A and Part B claims paid during the period from 3 days prior to a hospital admission through 30 days after discharge. These average Medicare payment amounts have been price-standardized to remove the effect of geographic payment differences and add-on payments for indirect medical education (IME) and disproportionate share hospitals (DSH). CMS uses the information on this webpage to calculate a hospital’s MSPB Measure value, which is reported on Hospital Compare. Specifically, the MSPB Measure methodology risk-adjusts the values on this webpage to account for beneficiary age and severity of illness. This webpage provides the pre-risk-adjusted values to help the public understand the MSPB Measure and its composition.

The mortality data in this table have been derived from death certificates in participation with the National Vital Statistics System, and are maintained and provided by the Utah Department of Health, Office of Vital Records. They include virtually all deaths of Utah residents, regardless of where the death occurred. The causes of death were coded using International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes. The population estimates for years 1980-1999 were produced by the Utah Governor's Office of Planning and Budget (GOPB). For years 2000 and later the population estimates are provided by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) through a collaborative agreement with the U.S. Census Bureau. The leading causes of death is defined by NCHS 50 leading causes.
